Wine, Cheese & Melon

Here’s a brand new mix for y’all. It’s based on a set list that I used when I DJed at an art reception at (Scene) Metrospace. There ain’t no party like an art reception party because an art reception party has wine, cheese and melon.

This is also the first mix I’m posting under my new DJ name, DJ Triple Rambo. Please adjust the mp3 tags of all of my previous mixes that you have downloaded. kthnxbye.

New Mix: International Seduction

I DJed last Thursday at the end of the year party of the MSU Graduate Employee Union, of which I am a member. Here’s a nice little 30 minute DJ mix I just put together that is based on the set I did that night. It’s pretty smooth. So smooth, I call it International Seduction. While my last mix was done with vinyl, this one was done on my computer with Mixxx, the same way I do it live. Also, if there any DJs out there, I welcome any tips on my beatmatching/transitions.

Tracklisting:
Chromatics – In the City
Kate Bush – Running Up That Hill
Teki Latex feat. Lio – Les matins des Paris
Snoop Dogg – Sensual Seduction
Goblin – Tenebre
LCD Soundsystem – All My Friends
Jiang Xiao Qing – Kokorogokoro Doutei

I’m not dead. Also Snoop Dogg.

So I haven’t posted in a while. That is because I am in grad school and am in the end of semester crazy shit time of the year. What free time I have to for music stuff has been devoted to putting together end of the year lists and end of the year mixes. Those will be up on the blog at some point in the next few weeks, but for now, I’m just going to post the best thing ever: “Sensual Seduction”, the new single by Snoop Dogg. Now, Doggy Dogg usually puts out one or two decent singles a year, but I can’t remember the last time he put out anything that really blew me away. But this song is awesome. And the video? It really takes it from good song to BEST THING EVER DONE BY ANYONE.

A list of things I live about this video: synthesizers, flying beds, star wipes, vocoders, video hos wearing throwback lingerie, disco balls, shiny suits, keytar, the line “If you don’t know by now, Doggy Dog is a Freak”, a rapped verse which makes it seem like Snoop is guesting on his own song, how the song kinda sounds like French House and most importantly, the VHS static at the beginning.

Here’s an 160k mp3 of the song of uncertain origin (it might be a myspace rip). I hope I don’t get arrested.

Samara Lubelski

I mentioned Samara Lubelski in my earlier post on Thurston Moore’s solo album. She played violin on it and is currently on tour with him. Parallel Suns is her third solo album for The Social Registry (one of my favorite contemporary labels). Its a collection of gorgeous sun-dappled psych/pop/folk songs that showcase Samara’s incredible and ethereal voice. At times it recalls Stereolab at their most spare, but it has more of a 60s private press vibe (think Wendy & Bonnie). The arrangements a relatively spare; they’re usually just guitar, some percussion, backing vocals and organ. It works perfectly, as Samara’s gentle voice would be overwhelmed by lush arrangements.

Sally Shapiro

discoromance-500×500.jpg
So Swedish dancing queen/disco princess Sally Shaprio‘s Disco Romance will finally hit US shores on October 30th courtesy of Paper Bag Records. However, its not the same album that you downloaded off Soulseek bought as a Swedish import in 2006. Most visible is the new cleaveage-less cover, but the content has been changed, too. The two remixes have been removed and replaced with 3 new songs (“He Keeps Me Alive”, “Skating in the Moonshine”, “Jackie Jackie (Spend This Winter with Me)”). The original version of “I’ll Be By Your Side” has been replaced by an 8 minute extended mix. So basically, now its more of a proper album and less of an extended EP. Rad.

Here’s one of the new tracks. Its more glorious headphone disco for dancing around your bedroom in your underwear. And it has a vocoder!

Clockcleaner

Clockcleaner are a Philadelphia band who just put out an awesome album on Load Records. However, Load Records issued the following disclaimer: “This record will confuse LOAD Records consumers however as its not a noise record, it is a record in the HARD ROCK mold. Please go back to your blogging. Good Day.” Clockcleaner also have a fan club with a monthly newsletter. Magic.

Pissed Jeans are probably the closest contemporary of Clockcleaner, but Clockcleaner are a little bit weirder. “Vomiting Mirrors” has a clinking piano that makes me think of Fucked Up.

Super Famicom

Super Famicom is a boy named PJ. He’s a pretty cool kid. He writes very good songs that recall Daniel Johnston, Adrian Orange, Little Wings and the people on that midwestern folk/punk circuit that I love so much. Here’s two songs from his album Emily Songs II. They’re lo-fi recordings, but he has some hi-fi stuff that is also really good streaming on his myspace page. If you like his music, you can order his CDs and tapes from his myspace.

Super Famicom – The Conception of Widowers (from Emily Songs II)
Super Famicom – Wrapped in the Bodies of Tormenters (from Emily Songs II)

This is the music site of a guy named Ed. I post things.
